Mr. Mark Carlson
As Director, Crisis Management for SPS Global, Mark provides the business and operational leadership, setting the direction, providing professional mentorship, support and advice for the company’s global crisis response team supporting the special risk insurance coverage provided by Travelers for kidnap for ransom, express and virtual kidnapping, criminal and cyber extortion, malicious product tampering, illegal detention, and marine piracy.
Mark has more than 30 years’ experience in international business, and project management for security, investigations, and intelligence operations in medium to high-threat operating environments. Mark has case managed complex international investigation cases for litigation support, reputational due diligence, and corporate fraud.
Mark has extensive global crisis response consulting experience as a crisis management specialist working for several retained London based response teams. He has been the
consultant of record for over 150 cases involving kidnap & ransom (criminal & insurgent), cyber extortion incidents, emergency evacuations, malicious product tampering and maritime piracy in countries including: Afghanistan, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, El Salvador, Ghana, India, México, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Somalia, South Africa, Uganda, United States, Venezuela, and Yemen.
Mark has served in senior executive positions with the world’s leading security risk management corporations and as a senior corporate security manager in the U.S. and in postings overseas to the following locations: Iraq, Afghanistan (Kabul), México, (México City), Colombia (Bogotá), United Kingdom (London), and the Republic of Panama.
As a field grade officer in the United States Army, he served as a U.S. Special Forces' (‘Green Beret’) Detachment Commander throughout Latin America, including: a tour in El Salvador; a Foreign Area Officer assigned to the Defense Attaché office at the US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia; on the Commanding General’s staff in the Republic of Panama, and as an intelligence officer assigned to the Counter-Drug Intelligence Analysis Center at the US Embassy in México City, México. Mark has first-hand understanding and experience dealing with key business, political, and social issues throughout Mexico and Latin America.
Mark holds a BBA and MBA from Hofstra University in New York and a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from Vanderbilt University. He is also a graduate of the Defense Language Institute and is fluent in Spanish. Mark is currently based in Houston, Texas (USA).
